The Dempster Highway in the Yukon of Canada can take you all the way to the Arctic Ocean, but along the way is a beautiful park called “Tombstone Territorial Park” (named because one of its famous peaks is shaped like a tombstone). It is an incredibly remote location with no service or gas stations, in fact a trip to get some extra gas took about three hours round trip.
We visited in late August, just as fall colors were beginning to change, but nowhere near the vibrant reds that it would be in the next few weeks. Almost every night featured the aurora and the day highlights included willow ptarmigans, also known as the AWEBO BIRD.
Hopefully a future trip will take us all the way to the Arctic Ocean and the town of Tuktoyaktuk, but in the meantime enjoy these views of what I imagine the northern boarders of Middle Earth would look like.
